Суд мести

Korovnikov is called again that day, and repeats everything he said during the pre-trial investigation. As soon as he begins to confuse his testimony when quizzed by the defence, Judge Olikhver calls an adjournment.

22 October 2004. Ararat Agasaryan is called. He was deputy head of the explosions department of the Moscow Criminal Investigation Department at the time of the blast outside Kostina's parents' flat. He gives technical details of the detonation carried out by Korovnikov in 1998. Korovnikov's cross-examination then continues. He asks the jury to disregard his eight murders and other crimes. "I have already repented before God and I think he has forgiven me," he says.

Judge Olikhver again bans the defence from asking certain questions of Korovnikov. The defence challenges her disregard of criminal procedural law. In response, she threatens that "if the lawyers for the defence do not cease such disgraceful conduct, the court will consider removing them from the trial".

25 October 2004. The defence team offer to withdraw from the case due to numerous breaches of criminal procedural law. Judge Olikhver refuses to consider the offer and the trial proceeds. Korovnikov's examination continues. With each day, his accounts become more detailed of events six years ago regarding Pichugin's involvement in the crimes of which he is charged.

Witness Vladimir Kabanets is also called. He is a member of Korovnikov's gang and has been sentenced to 22 years in a high-security jail with confiscation of property for murder and rape. In court, he reads his testimony from notes with answers to possible questions.

Galina Dedova, mother of Olga Gorina, is called. She tells the court that there are many possible reasons for the Gorins' disappearance, and that Pichugin is unlikely to be involved: "My son-in-law was not so stupid as to blackmail Pichugin, and Pichugin is not so stupid as to kill him." After this, Judge Olikhver adjourns proceedings without explanation.

26 October 2004. From their reactions to events so far, it becomes clear that the jury is leaning towards the defence.

Judge Olikhver blames the defence team for media interest in the case and for newspaper reports on the trial. "If there is just one more article on this trial, I shall consider dismissing the jury," she says.

Pavel Popov, a member of Korovnikov's gang, is also called. He was sentenced to 14 years in a high-security jail with confiscation of property for murder and rape. His story contradicts that of Korovnikov and Kabanets about how the explosion outside Kostina's parents' flat was set off.

The prosecution calls a further gang member, Denis Erbes. He is serving 17 years in a high-security jail with confiscation of property for murder and rape.

27 October 2004. The prosecution calls witness Oleg Smirnov. He is a former policeman, serving 7 years in a high-security jail with confiscation of property for oil thefts as part of an organised crime ring. He was Gorin's driver, and says that he was aware Gorin was involved in criminality. Dedova, who is in court, protests at what she perceives as slander of her son.
