Суд мести

Smirnov was questioned shortly after the disappearance, and his answers were clear-cut: "I know nothing. I suspect no-one. I noticed nothing suspicious in Gorin's behaviour the day before we were due to travel. Gorin owed no-one and feared no-one." This is not the testimony of a police officer. It's the testimony of a convict.

In March, the case was handed over to the Procuracy General and "specialists" from the FSB. Smirnov was questioned again, and all of a sudden he said that he had suspected Pichugin from the outset!

All of the above was known long before the Pichugin case was made the spearhead for the attack against Yukos. The investigation had not done its job properly.

The Gorins' and other unsolved murders

Remember the testimony of Olga Gorina's son Dima. The men who broke into the house called each other by nicknames: Wild Boar, Bull and Dog. This is a direct lead to whoever was giving them their orders. Tambov is not a large town. The well-informed know of the so-called Wild Boar gang. From the mid-90s there was a whole series of business-related murders in the town. Timewise, this coincided with the second wave of shady privatisation deals as state property was carved up among the local dignitaries.

In particular, detectives and journalists in Tambov suspect the most senior officials in the region. An important aid to understanding the essence of the case is the fact that the region is still being run by the same people as in Algoritm's day. A source with good connections to the underworld claims that the Wild Boar gang carried out some of these murders. Wild Boar was an outsider, not from the local criminal world. He got his nickname from his squashed nose and distinctive manner of speaking.

They sometimes hint in Tambov that Wild Boar and his people are from within the state security structures. Because the gang operates with a surprising degree of confidence and makes little attempt to hide. But the most interesting thing is that their modus operandi, especially in thievery and protection rackets, exactly fits the assault at the Gorins' home. Men in facemasks broke into flats, usually grabbed everyone present, and took them to somewhere out of town. Then came the settling of accounts. There were even cases of children being seized.

Today anyone up to date with business Tambov-style will tell you that everything of value in the region is "run" by the St Petersburg group of the so-called "Tambovskies". One of the deputy governors is believed to be their man in the regional administration. Gorin was among his proteges. And the deputy governor's go-between to St Petersburg's most violent criminal outfit is a high-profile member of the regional assembly.

There is no way that Gorin could not have been drawn into the Tambovskies' orbit. Most of our sources openly say that he was one of theirs. And it was through him that the Tambovskies kept trying to infiltrate the Yukos empire. There are stories of Pichugin being offered big money in return for putting up Gorin as director of Tambovnefteprodukt.
