Суд мести

But Aleksey had already burnt his fingers once on Gorin and preferred not to take any more risks. This again shows that Yukos took a dim view of all crooked types and did all it could to keep them out.

So what kind of relationship drew together the missing Gorin and the arrested Pichugin? The most likely answer is that Gorin was a particularly valuable source of information on the Tambov underworld. A source so valuable that Pichugin, an FSB veteran who hated crooks, felt compelled to simulate friendship. He reluctantly became godfather to Gorin's son. He occasionally went fishing with Gorin and regularly promised to find him work either in Yukos or somewhere else.

These are minor favours that any handler will do to show an informer that he's valued and cared about. Meanwhile, Gorin's information helped Pichugin to stop Yukos's local branches from being penetrated by people in the pay of criminals. Judging from the company's success in the region, Pichugin was a class act.

Similar sources have been quizzed by my fellow journalists investigating Gorin's past. Their opinion is that Gorin, as a member of the Kumarin crime gang acting on Pichugin's "instructions", was simply in no position to resort to the services of someone like Korovnikov.

The Kumarins are regarded as one of the most "transparent" of all the Slav crime gangs, meaning that they operated strictly according to the code of the underworld. But Korovnikov was just a rapist and a thug. Or unhinged, like Chikatilo. Anyone in any doubt about this I refer to his criminal case and to his chilling behaviour as described earlier. No self-respecting underworld type would have anything to do with someone like Korovnikov. Nobody, and certainly nobody like Gorin, would even consider hiring a multiple murderer as a hitman for Russia's biggest company. Gorin was part of the criminal fraternity and his mind would have worked accordingly. There were things that he had to take into account.

By that, I mean that Korovnikov, being a rapist, was "leant on" in his cell on the orders of the police even during the pre-trial investigation into his own offences. And, they say, he was "leant on" harder to obtain the required testimony ...

Double agent

The year 2002 saw a number of events in St Petersburg and Tambov of interest to our inquiries. In Tambov Region a team of serious crime investigators from the Procuracy General began work. And in St Petersburg a turf war broke out. In particular, the Kumarins (that is, the Tambovskies) came under attack.

Here it is useful to know that back in 1997 an investigation committee at the federal Ministry of Internal Affairs took over all the financial pyramid cases and their duped investors. Serious crime investigators were put in charge. And it was at this time that the committee took a professional interest in Gorin. At the Association of Deceived Investors (in Moscow), they know Algoritm as one of the largest regional pyramids. Its activists and people who have seen Gorin's file say that the details clearly point to a link between the region's current rulers and large-scale financial machinations as privatisation got underway in Tambov.
