The adventure continues. The swabs

Let us move on to the swabs. Semibratova examined a swab completely soaked in blood and wrote: "Blood is of a man, group A." That is, not from Gorin. Nobody present at the crime scene on the day had that blood group. The FSB quickly found a way out: "Sample not fit for examination." No explanation. But what about their super ultramodern equipment? This was not some microscopic fragment but a swab full of blood.

Another problem was solved in passing. They also had to prove that Olga Gorina was dead. Semibratova examined the next swab and concluded that it also from a man. The FSB carefully reviewed this provincial finding and heaved a sigh of relief: "Blood from Gorina."

Semibratova identified the blood in the third sample as group B. The FSB noted down: "origin - Gorin". This was the smallest of the samples, but they were sure it was Gorin's blood. The preceding sample, meanwhile, a large and saturated swab, had been declared unfit for use.

Remember, all these samples had been taken from the same pool of blood in the garage: the one that was supposedly from Gorin's wife and the ones from men of differing blood groups. Quite a cocktail. Could it have been specially left there in the garage?

From here on, some strange things happen. A year on, fragments of connective tissue were discovered in one of the swabs. It was decided to take another scraping from the wall. This was sent to Semibratova with the splendid question: "which organ is Gorin's blood from?" Who said it was Gorin's? Semibratova, of course, was oblivious to the loaded question and replied that the blood was from the liver. The FSB made a note: blood from Gorin's liver.

Excellent. Now our conscientious provincial expert had confirmed that it was Gorin's blood. This was like Putin sending some of his labrador's blood to the FSB on 1 April and asking which organ Sechin's blood was from. You'd have to laugh.

To complete the picture, remember that in the beginning there was another document as well - the record of the search at the crime scene. An investigator from the Procuracy General examined the scene long after the crime and described the house, the fence, the garage and the stockade. He conscientiously listed all his observations and saved his conclusion for the end: "In connection with the abovementioned, I assume that the Gorins' murder was in Pichugin's interest." And that was also regarded as an expert opinion. This piece of paper was so shameful that the prosecution itself removed it from the file.

The FSB's attempts to correct the inconvenient findings of the Tambov expert Semibratova had been blessed with success. They had proved that the unfortunate couple were dead. Now they could happily convict Aleksey Pichugin of murder. They were so sure of victory that they did not bother look for black plastic packaging or the right seal when they switched the DNA samples.

During the trial, judge Natalya Olikhver threatened to have the defence removed from the courtroom if it asked about the expert examinations. She said they were not relevant to the case. This is why the trial was held in camera, to conceal the disgrace to our judicial system.
